.....php code editor

Being hitherto a HTML kinda guy and wanting to contribute rather than just take, I need to "learn" php.

I'm thinking that the best way to learn is by trying stuff for myself, so I need a fairly simple (coz I am!) php editing tool that will:

1. help me learn as I go along
2. tell me when my code is FUBAR
3. let me create code from scratch
4. work with MySQL databases

Please could you guys point me in the right direction?

Oh, and the cheaper the better

What do you guys use?

I use edit plus, shareware that cost 40 dollars several years ago. The main advantage is the line number references and the color coding. I liked the price at the time.

http://www.php.net/manual/en/tutorial.php is a manual that simplifies the transistion from html into php.

Just one opinion.

There is no editor that writes code instead of you.

If you know PHP, you can use anything from Notepad to Dreamweaver.

I like PSPad - www.pspad.com. It has syntax highlighting for several programming languages and builtin preview in browser. It also includes a function and variable browser for your project. And it runs from a USB! (just copy the folder and it works)

Others have liked Eclipse - www.eclipse.org

I used to use PHP Designer - www.mpsoftware.dk/phpdesigner.php - when it used to be free, now it's still pretty cheap (39 euro). Try it free for 14 days!
