how then me to have such an arrangement of news in page of welcome:
Article of the day
ordering of the last 3 news by category

I will like to have a page of news as the one of: xoops.com

What version of the News module are you running?

That can be done via the Spotlight feature.

News 1.53 is the current version of the News module and, as said above, the Spotlight feature will do as you wish.

However, to get a summary of the last news items is all categories (as on xoops.org) you need the xmspotlight module. This works together with the News module. Latest version is 1.02 Beta2.
