This is a pretty serious set of questions...fortunately they all relate to a crash of a test site, not a live one.

One of the "mule" domains we use for testing went belly up for no apparent reason.... suddenly home page went 'white screen' and cannot access admin area.

The database looks intact.

Exploring the site, we find the cache directory is completely empty.

1. Is there any logical reason for this to happen? ..or, just an unlucky glitch at the server?

Now...the real important question:

Is there a process that can be used to "rebuild" the cache folder?

What else is in there besides adminmenu.php

Although it's a test site...we would like to get it back to it's last known condition. As a test site, we haven't backed it up regularly...

Sure, we could overwrite with an older site backup..
...but I would very much like to know more about this problem and discover a repair procedure.

Just empty the cache folders (cache and templates_c). They'll rebuild themselves with use. At the same time this might fix your problem. I'd say you might have wine... not lemonade.

OK..here's a follow-up..and I hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.

Orig problem: site went belly up for no apparent reason.
Quick scan of database looked normal

Symptoms:
-access site home page and get a blank screen
-access admin by url and get a blank screen
-cache folder is empty
-force by URL the admin-system settings and try and re-save to recreate adminmenu.php - no joy, still empty folder.

Dead duck, eh?

Well (after searching around for answers here)

1. Using PHPMyAdmin, went in to config table and set debug on.
2. that now showed a fatal error in class/xoopseditor/xoopseditor.php
on line 70...that is where a check is made for a Frameworks file

Bingo! (lightbulb on)....the last thing we did before the site went south was to upload Wordpress and Frameworks for a later installation.

Went in and deleted the Frameworks directory and...viola
The site is back alive.

Don't know why....we'll find that out later.
But the steps to solve it became simple with debug.

Just passin' it along for other rookies like me.
