When you edit an article in Smartsection you see a button Image Manager. When you click that one you'll be able to upload a picture to your server and then use it in the article.

Very easy, sccs

This request has been answered in the SmartFactory already.

Try another text editor, like tinyeditor. If you use the plugin iBrowser (see here for a demo) than you can easily browse your pictures and insert them in your articles.

You really should try tinyeditor.
This wysiwyg editor has multiple options/plugins for image management:
- iBrowser and iManager
- XOOPS ImageManager
- ImageManager
- Advanced ImageManager (plugin for ImageManager)
- and xrmanager (plugin for Adv. ImageManager). This one let's you upload images and easily browsing your images through thumbnails.
There are a lot of possibilies for the images, like popups for a larger view of the image.

Beside all the options for images, tinyeditor is also one of the best (I think the best) wysiwyg editors working with XOOPS and ideal for writing articles with modules as News, Article and SmartSection.
