I have noticed a couple of new modules which are designed to work with PHP 5 only. Since switching to our own VPS, PHP is now my responsibility. I have some experience with shell commands, but the prospect of upgrading PHP without losing websites, data, email services is, well.. daunting to put it lightly.

Does anyone know of any tutorials like A step-by-step guide to upgrading PHP on your live web server via Shell access without losing your business overnight

which OS are you using ?
suse, debian, centos... ? (rpm, yum, apt-get)

maybe, install php4 and php5 is a good thing to prevent loss of data ?
here you'll find how install php4 and php5 at same time on same server. (debian / ubuntu)

http://hurring.com/howto/php4_and_php5/

update php4 to php5 in debian
http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/php5.htm

it's not easy to find a step by step tutorial because, there are lot of parameters for each server in the world.

hope than someone will help you better !
good luck !

If possible, it's nice to have a duplicate server, with the same hardware, that you can use for testing upgrades such as this. Then you can take your time and make sure everything works before upgrading the production server.

Thx for those links blueteen. I'm sorry, I should of course have mentioned that the VPS runs Redhat Fedora core Linux.

@Dave_L
I have been learning a little about Linux using an old laptop on which I installed Ubuntu (Hoary Hedghog). Do you think that would be sufficient for me to test a remote PHP upgrade on, or are the two Linux varients very different?

Fedora and Ubuntu are very different, so I'm not sure how much help it would be to do the upgrade on the laptop.

But at least you could test your PHP scripts to see if they work ok under PHP 5. I do most of my development on MEPIS / PHP 5 for a production server running Fedora 5 / PHP 5, and rarely have PHP-specific issues. (MEPIS is another Debian-based distro like Ubuntu.)
