I want to install some new modules but i cannot see any uploader or anything to upload the zip files. Will i have to upload the files through ftp into the modules folder.

Yes. Unzip them locally. Then find the main module folder. (thats the one containing the file xoops_version.php)
That is the folder you are uploading into your xoopsrootdir/modules folder.
