which module do i use to place rotating banners on my site?

"Rotating banners" it's a feature integrated in the CORE of XOOPS and can be found in admin side of your site as firs item in the "System" drop'down menu

i noticed that the banner rotater is part of the core, but i'm looking for small banner rotater that i coudl put in one of the blocks.

I think you can use either smartpartner either smartclient and taking in cosideration the way you are going to use you can hide the menu entry and edit a bit the block template so it won't have a link to the module itself , edit from module's preferences the height & width values and that should do it you got yourself a banner rotator module
