I spent most of the day yesterday loading and unloading xoops. I thought that it would be great and very easy to use, but once I loaded it up, all I had was a column with the links on the left. No structure or content. Then I loaded modules, and started to a little more. The themes where not taking effect. I would like to know what a default install is supposed to look like.

You need to create the content, hence "content management system".

I recommend that you visit the Xoops Documentation website and become familiar with Xoops.

There is also a FAQ on themes and templates that will provide you with instructions on how to upload and view themes.
