File Permissions Problem

I have SSH and SFTP access to my host, i've dont chmod in both protocols,
CHMOD 0666 mainfile.php
CHMOD 0777 uploads/
CHMOD 0777 cache/
CHMOD 0777 templates_c/

i've also used a PHP script to change their permissions, they all say they have changed the file and directories permissions but the XOOPS installer script says it cant and wont write to mainfile.php.

try chmodding mainfile.php to 777 - just for installation. Servers are funny like that (don't worry, XOOPS will yell at you to chmod it to 444 after install).

Thanks, but it didnt work... i tried chmodding all to 0777 then to 0666 and then all folders to 0666 and mainfile.php to 0777, no luck.... I'm going to try re-downloading xoops, any more ideas? (i come up with the strangest problems ever)

maybe it is the most stupid answer... but it happened to me... maybe because i am stupid... i will check that later... have you got several XOOPS sites??? maybe you have 2 fisicals XOOPS example: /www/site1 and /www/site2 and maybe in your virtual host configuration ... you have make a salad with the names and directorys... check it!...
Also if you can access to the terminal .. check the owner with ... with 0777 isnt necesary ... but isnt a bad idea to the right functionality of xoops!...

nekro, sorry, i dont realy understand what you mean, but heres something Site Docs said: files must be accessable bo 'other' to be used by a cgi script? could that be it right their?
Also it says to chmod o+r but that only gives read access. Also i'm being hosted on sourceforge.net if that helps...

Is "safe_mode" enabled on your server? If so, the files may need to be owned by the same user under which the web server is running.

I tried his solution but it didnt work XOOPS couldnt find the file mainfile.php (i had a symbolic link running to it) though it did find the directories. What went wrong?
