CBB 1.16 can't change forum view

I am using the above module and for some time it comes up with an error when you try to change the layout of a topic say from flat to compact

"The requested URL /forum/viewtopic.php was not found on this server."

well it is on the server except it would be on forum/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php

why is looking in the wrong place and how do I correct this

are you using mod_rewrite?

ah ha..thats it ins't it, the rewrite in hta access is sending it to the wrong place, but I am not sure how to adjust it to send it to the right place. (sorry its not modrewrite I use but an URL rewrite...buty I am guessing thye do similar things)

I see now when it redirects it is leaving off the newbb part of the address

Ok I am using the urls hack, and have a rewrite in htaacess. The question is what do i have to do to get the viewtopic.php link to work, do I have to put in a specific redirect or alter the rewrite or something in loadpage.php??

UPDATE: it seems to relate to comments here:
