I should be able to answer my own question now:
Looks like it is all still hard coded as is the registration forms as follows:
Edit the classes in xoops/class/xoopsform to customise form elements. Edit xoops/class/xoopsform/themeform.php to edit the table in which the form elements are placed...
After the shock of the above I'm once more without an upgrade path. I was desperately looking for a CMS for
http://darklight.co.za and having checked many of them, I thought XOOPS would be the one with CBB the forums. Xaraya is still way too young. I'm hoping XOOPS 4 will keep a better eye on code separation etc.
I know most people should be able to work with the above, but it just doesn't feel right to have to hack your way through fundamental XOOPS files like that. Even the little things get to me: usage of ' and " in the HTML source and source code.
I'll have to make do with adding stuff to my site within the limited framework that is phpbb and hope for better CMS days.
I may just be an old grunt
