Possible to NOT have a left side block?

I've removed all the left side bars from my site as I have a menu going across the top - however the white space remains there and the middle section doesn't resize to accomodate it?!

This works fine with the right side block, is there any way to not have a left block?

aye I've tried that - it doesn't work - how do I know if it's possible with my theme - the person in that thread suggests only some themes can do this (though it seems pretty fundamental!).

The left block loop is getting hidden, but the white space is still reserved...

Any other ideas?
