I used to design websites that were at a fixed width of 800 x 600 res. With the popularity of TFTs, I started to create fluid layouts that fill the screen at 1024 x 768, but will shrink to 800 x 600 if required. I can get some sites down to 640 x 480 if the columns don't overlap too much.
However, the 19 and 20 inch TFTs are now much more affordable and the recommended resolutions are even higher. It's going to be fun keeping sites looking proportionally good (and readable) at 1792 x 1344 *and* 800 x 600.
I'd be interested to know what techniques other site designers are using to accommodate the increasingly diverse parameters?.
For example, is it preferable to use JavaScript to load diffferent stylesheets, themes and images based on the browser's 'screen' property, or is it now reasonable to adopt 1024 x 768 as the 'new' fixed width?
A thread is for life. Not just for Christmas.
