Adding new template to an existing module

I'm trying to add a new template to an existing module. I manually added an entry to _tplfile in the database and tried to update the module, but it simply deleted the row I inserted telling me it was disabled. Apparently there's something I'm missing, so can you please tell me how to add a new template?
