You did run xoopsupdate.php didn't you? That is essential, if memory serves me, because there are changes to the database which can only be accomplished by running that file. Also, a little less obscurity, IMHO, as to what exactly is going on would be helpful. Not enough to say:

I did run xoopsupdate.php and updated all the modules... I've even tried uninstalling them and installing them again and still to no avail...

I'm using News 1.1 that came with XOOPS before the upgrade to 2.2

I'm not having this particular problem with the forum cause I'm using Newbb2... that might make the difference there

I did have this issue, however i edited all the profiles of the users to include the REAL NAME field, as this is what the news module picks up on.
