This was the error that the script returned:

Could not connect: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

I'm assuming that the MySQL client is XOOPS and or the version of PHP that I'm using?

In this case, "client" refers to the PHP module or library that's interfacing with MySQL.

That simple test script has nothing to do with XOOPS. The error you got shows that it's a PHP/MySQL conflict.

You might search the forums here for that error message. There have been similar posts on that topic with solutions discussed. (I don't recall the details offhand.)

The problem, most likely is using MySQL 4.1
You will probably have to flush the privileges and use pre-4.1 user authentication.

Mysql 4.0.24 doesn't have this problem

Thanks for the great responses I got to my questions, I finally got the latest release of XOOPS working with the latest and greatese PHP and MySQL, my problem was making sure windows server 2003 could see the PHP modules specific to MySQL.
