Document Management System (DMS) - send email

Hi all,
in the DMS Configuration section E-Mail Configuration i enable E-Mail and i set the sender e-mail address. I am not able to send the e-mail. The only way is to set up the SMTP server and the sendmail_from in php.ini. Where i'm wrong?
