li styles question

I am using the Spotlight module on my front page. Under the "Other News" section of the module is a basic list enclosed in < li> tags. Is it possible to style the background of those tags odd and even to give more style to this list?

And if so how would I style it? And if not, any other options to dress up the list?

Could you do it with something like;

in your template?

Thanks, I will try that when I get home from work.

Searched google everything just shows different kinds of list, no custom styling of backgrounds.
