Do my custom themes have to follow the 0-0-0-0-0 (left, centerl, center, centerr, right) template? Is there a way i can change it to be a bit more flexible or am i mising the point totally?

It is totally up to your imagination and creativity. You can do whatever you want.

With <{$content}> and menu items, you are all set. Blocks are decorating items.

Cool

So say i have a few blocks that i have visible on my main page, how do i post information to these blocks? e.g. a basic announcement blocks where i can type in a message for ppl to see when visiting my site.

Im currently trying my hardest to customise the default template but i have some mini tables within my main layout. Whats the code to position a specific block into one of these tables in my template?

Am i missing some of the basic module addons to do this kind of thing...?

Thanks

Xoops WIKI would be a very good starting point if you have not checked it out.

XOOPS WIKI
Sections: templates vs theme, and block vs template, how-to will point you to the right directions.

If the blocks are associated with a module, the information is usually retrieved from a database table where you store the information.

If you create a custom block such as the welcome block in this site, you type in the information while you are creating the block.

Is there any way to also be able to insert custom fields into my submit news and articles pages?

It is possible, but you would have to make structural changes to your XOOPS table and modify submit.php to include these custom fields.
