Can anyone tell me the reasons for both using and not using this module? I really like the layout of it, but don't like the fact that it doesn't use the site theme.
Thanks.

Main disadvantages:
1. it affects core files, so that in times of upgrade you need to wait for the developper of the module to also update it to the new core.
2. gets very troublesome if you plan to add other hacks to the core.

I've tried it and gone with newbb just to have the peace of mind of it not touching core files.

Thanks for the reply. Your reasoning is why I haven't ran it yet. The problem is that I want to have two forum areas. I can't clone the newbb module and the Invision Power Board is the only thing I've found that will work with newbb installed also.

The other Discussion Boards that are available in the Repository use either the same newbb directory or the same functions.

Any ideas?

As Lance says the disadvantages are the core files, but it is well supported.. and the last 3 XOOPS upgrades, i released updated core files within a day of the new XOOPS version being released.

there are some hacks that may interfere, mainly gijoes autologin hack and marcans multilingual hack, but if you're comfortable with editing then you could apply the hack to those files manually.. it's the same anyway when new XOOPS released, you have to wait for updates for those hacks too..

the theme with a little time and patience can be made to match XOOPS theme using ipb's built in css and skin editor..

take a look at http://www.bbtb.co.uk/modules/ipboard/ for a demo. (it still needs a few tweaks here and there)

advantages in my opinion far outway the disadvantages, i think it's faster for 1.. but if you don't require all the features then you have to decide whether it's worth it or not..

Thanks M0nty -

THis is good news! I don't use GiJoes autologon or the multilingual hacks...

I have no problem waiting a day, or even a week for updates.
Questions:

I did see the "database" options for backups. Can you tell me if this communicates over port 80?

Do the options for setting additonal Registration fields works?

I did install this in a test site and ran the Conversion Script "bb_ibf_conv.php" and received the following:

Error:
Quote:

Table 'webdisco_main.xoops_bb_forum_mods' doesn't exist
Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in C:\public_html\xoops\modules\ipboard\bb_ibf_conv.php on line 293

Thanks for all your help!

i haven't used ipb's backup menu, i mainly use the cpanel server utility & phpmyadmin for backing up.. but i would presume it uses port 80..

regarding your error, i guess you were trying to convert newbb2 to x-ipb using the newbb converter..

there's a newbb2 to x-ipb converter on bbpixel.com now, you shouldn't have problems with that 1 :)

also yes the registration and user profile pages can be edited the same as the standalone.. there's an option in admin that allows you to choose registration method and usercp.. (either XOOPS or ipb) you can also choose to wrap it inside XOOPS or whether to have it full screen.

Thanks again, yes I did download the wrong converter. The correct one works fine.

I think I'll be migrating to this module tonight and then figure out how to work on the theme issues.

I appreciate your help, M0nty.

u can set permissions on the members list in ipb admin.. i think in user group settings if u check the options..

regarding user id you would need to edit the skin files.

for user id in topics, edit skin/xx/skin_topic.php and find around line 271.

{$author['member_number']}<br />
{
$author['member_group']}<br />

and remove them.

do the same in skin_profile.php

you need to do that in every skin file you install.

I'd love to know the reasoning behind the necessity of having 2 forum softwares to do the job you need.

You can pretty much setup different forum areas within one forum with direct links to each portion with MultiMenu.

You can see this on my sites below.

Cheers.
