I disagree. You want a 'light' forum then I would direct you to newbb1.

The point of CBB/newbb2 was to expand and give a deep and rich feature set. You cant do that without code.

As for the plugin suggestion, I think thats a horrible idea. Why add extra layers of complexity for that sake of adding in the end. It will just add confusion and add extra layers which add extra chances of 'breaking' something.

There are other forums you can use if you dont want all the bells of CBB is the bottom line.

I certainly would like to get on board and help develop (non-code wise) the RPG and karma system.

Here are the complied notes I have for inserting a karma system into CBB. My ideas plus a few others from the dev.xoops site before newbb2 went belly up.
_____

Gaining Karma:

a. 10 karma for every post

b. If a members (non-mod/admin) post gets stickied 100 karma

c. votes for posts

1 pip = -15 karma
2 pip = -5
3 pip = 1
4 pip = 5
5 pip = 10

d. Number of views. Views of your thread divided by 20 = karma

e. Weekly a member can give a bonus/penality karma (up to 10% max of that users karma) to/from another user with the ability to attach such a action to a pm on why they are doing so. Removing karma does not give it to anyone, it simply is removed.

f. earning/losing karma by administrators

Same as above except no limits.

g. Karma market or bank

Several directions you can go with this, but I was thinking perhaps have a 'casino' module. Where with the karma you put in the bank you can have simple games like slots, blackjack 21, poker and roulette. You can wager your karma either against the house or another member (whatever karma they have in the bank).

Those are just some features in a very beginning stage, or even concepts. If you have interest, we could have further discussion.

Also put the karma rating in with the RPG stats so everyone knows their current karma standing. Also perhaps have it merge with the post count ranks. Thus you can have titles for not only going in the plus but in the negatives. Since it will be possible to have negative karma.

None the less my thoughts on the topic.. Also on a side note, if you could take a look at this idea I had and let me know how feasible it is and if you'd have any interest in pursuing it?

About WF-Section

In easier words: WF-Section needs at one dedicated guy just for maintaining itself, which is a no go for busy people like the XOOPS Devs.

I had been the lead developer of wfsection sincehttp://www.wf-projects.com was established.
For wfsection 2.x series, I felt that it would take too much effort for me considering its codebase and my knowledge on it so after the wfsection 2.05(I even did not remember whether it was released or not) I left it to other developers.
Since then I had been working on wfsection 3, which is re-designed from ground.

I have to say that management is much more important to a large project than expected, WF-projects is yet another example.

I am glad to see that Mr catzwolf has been back to wf-projects and he asked the developers to leave so that he will take over wf modules, again.
I ever said "catzwolf was not willing to leave XOOPS". Actually it is not the first time for him to come back to wfprojects since he left wfsection.xoops2.com and wf-projects.com was then established by Bender and other wf guys.

Anyway, wf projects will move on and the modules labelled with "WF" that we are working on are also progressing.

The article management, which I have been worked on for 6 months almost as full time and was planned to be released as wfsection 3, now is for internal test.
And a stable (former) WFsection 2.08 will be released by a former WFsection developer with a new name, in early June.

phppp -

As I hope you know, I have the utmost respect for you. You have always replied to my inquires to your modules and assited when I posted issues to you.

I wish others here would learn from you example, but thats not here nor there right now.

I hope you understand why I and many others are fustrated right now. Honestly, I dont care about this new version or that fork of wf-sections. I would be COMPLEATLY happy with just a patch to fix the currect public version or a upgrade script to go to the newer beta.

I am NOT voicing concern about the delay in the new version(s). Frankly, I couldnt give a rats fat arse about them. For my needs the current version is fine IF a patch was issued to just correct the major outstanding bugs/security problems.

As a former developer, last I knew you fixed the currect code before you moved on to the next version. You did not leave your customer base hanging. Perhaps things have changed since I was in s/w development... *shrugs*

None the less, I hope you can see where my fustration is coming from on this topic.

I dont need more excuses. I do need results, product, patches.

> About the default modules being crap:
When I enter the XOOPS site, it says "powered by You".

*snip*

a. I am working with phppp on the karma system for CBB, since I am not a coder thus thats my input into the project.

b. Thats a cop out, 'want something better, write it yourself'. Not all of us are fluient in php. So those that cant write code do not have the right to point out issues? Please.. grow up and stop the wanna-be elitist attitude.

Thank you for the feedback, that clarifies much. I and overall agree with your vision on this level. It sounds like a solid plan.

Of course we wont know until it is in place.

I do have concerns about how 'out sourcing' the core modules will effect XOOPS as a whole. But I am willing to give it a shot.

Thats a very debatable point. I put the WF modules inching very closely to abandonware if not already there.

This is not true, as development is continuing - ablite slowly.

David

WF-Projects

When I see product not shallow promises (as all WF section users have been hearing for almost a year now) then I shall re-evaluate my position. Until then I stand by my comments.

It baffels me why its SO difficult for you people to just issue a patch to fix the most critical issues with the last full release. Thats all I, and most others using WF-section, am asking. Either that or make a script to port us to the new beta version that you claim has these fixes in place.

Either way I feel franky screwed over at this point. If you cant get the job done hand it over to someone who can. But stop jerking us around with your promises that sound like a broken record for the past year.

> 1) Taking over modules to make them better and release them with the core

> This, we will not do. We are currently 6 core developers, each with other projects of our own (full time jobs, module development, that kind of thing). Taking over other projects and make them "ours" is not the idea of taking the modules out of the core - on the contrary, we want to be clear of having to support modules and able to pick the best, we can find, so we can focus on making XOOPS as good as we can.

Perhaps I am not being clear, or I am misunderstanding you.

What I mean, for example, is remove the current news and article module. And replace it with a renamed news 1.3 and wf-sections and make those applets the base of the new default modules.

> I'm sure that when you find a module that you can make better, the developer(s) would love to work with you on doing that.

With people like phppp or hervet, indeed that system works. They are active and make a effort to reply to you.

But with a WF module and an exist in name only dev team, that does not work too well. I am STILL waiting for a secuirty fix or upgrade script for the last full verion of WF-sections thats over a yr old now.

> 2) WYSIWYG Editor
It's on the to-do list for 2.2, but there are unresolved issues like how to manage the editors (selecting which editor to use - per user? - should the toolbar options be manageable by the site admin? or the user? Or not at all?) and I have also a concern as to how the content is stored and displayed.

Thats fair, all I wanted was it be to worked on/looked at which you apparently are. So if thats the case this point I am content with.

Thank you for the reply.

> Going back to one of your points - "the default modules being crap" - don't forget that shortly no default modules will be packaged with Xoops, so the new user can download the latest news, forum, content, media etc module.

From my understanding they are going to have module packs tho.. so in effect their are still going to be core modules, correct?

> Taking over undeveloped modules? Well the repository reorganisation may not have been 100% popular - but it will mean that some modules are not lost.

Sorry, dont follow your point..?

> I don't agree with what all you said, but if I look at what you mean consisely - it boils down to "reorganisation and tidying will make XOOPS better". If thats what you mean, then give the people who are trying to do this time... we do have lives away from this system, but we are working on this!

I do not have a issue with the time (within limits) required, but my point was to raise issues that I felt needs to be addressed in the first place. I am glad to see at the very least staff are being assigned to wade though the modules and pull out the broken ones.
