You made some good points there.

At the core developers meeting yesterday, personnel were assigned to the tasks of getting 2.0.17 and 2.2.5 released. (The meeting notes will be published shortly.) These are only bug-fix releases, I think, so there shouldn't be any controversy here.

As the one assigned to handle 2.2.5, I will be asking for feedback from the community on any bugs that I may overlook.

The longer term task of merging the 2.0/2.2/2.3 branches is still being discussed. I think everyone would agree that these branches do need to be merged; the issue is "how". When a plan is decided upon by the team, it will be posted for public feedback.

The core dev team will also be posting periodic status reports.

So I think we're on the same page here.

Catz, I hope you will continue to be a part of the XOOPS project. That goes for marco and herve too, and anyone else who wants to help.

But I don't think you, or anyone else for that matter, should be the sole leader. The problem with having a single leader is that the project is at his mercy. If he leaves, or fails to meet his commitments, the project stagnates. We've seen that for the last several years.

The XOOPS project is not a military organization, nor a commercial one. It's an open-source project made up of volunteers. All decisions must be reached by discussion, resulting in mutual agreement. Actions can only be achieved through willing cooperation.

For that reason, the project must be led by a group of people who can work together. If one of them leaves the project, for any reason, the project can continue.

A framework must exist that allows anyone to contribute. And decisions must always be discussed in public before become finalized.

The core developers have been meeting, in an open forum, for the last couple of weeks at sf.net. It was slow getting started, but I believe we are beginning to make progress.

Other teams have been having discussions here, as you've seen.

It's only been three weeks since skalpa's resignation was announced. Please allow some more time before making judgements.

Thanks for the report. I added a reply there with a slightly different fix, using "foreach" instead of "for", so that the array indices are ignored completely.

Even if you're not a "member" of a team, you can still contribute to that team's effort. Hopefully, the teams will all be conducting their business in the open, and "non-members" can participate too.

I know we need structure to get things rolling. Eventually I hope the project will evolve to the point where people will contribute where needed without having an official status, and that there will a large enough pool of contributors to make this possible.

I agree that CAPTCHA's are not the ultimate tool, although I still think they're useful.

The "SESSION/POST" method you describe is already implemented in the XoopsSecurity class, and can be enabled by setting the fifth parameter in the XoopsForm constructor to "true". This feature is available in both 2.0.16 and 2.2.5-RC2. At least, I think that feature does the same thing you describe.

captcha is practically useless at stopping bots, and we have to figure out other methods of prevention.

I disagree.

On a couple of (non-XOOPS) sites, we were getting a moderate amount of "bot spam". I implemented a simple CAPTCHA. It consists of a four-digit number displayed as an image. I didn't even bother to distort the characters in the image. That stopped 100% of the spam.

Granted, my sites are not high-traffic, and maybe the sophisticated bots don't visit them. But in my case, the CAPTCHA served its purpose very well.

In response to limecity, more information is needed. Are you talking about an isolated spam that could have been posted by a real person?

I'm not familiar with how this particular CAPTCHA works. Perhaps it has a weakness.

Change:

<{if $xoops_dirname == "xcgal" || "newbb"}>

to:

<{if $xoops_dirname == 'xcgal' or $xoops_dirname == 'newbb'}>

I've been thinking about the proposal for an End Users' Team since sailjapan first introduced it.

My conclusion is that vaughan is right. We're all end users.

The direction we're heading in is to make XOOPS a truly open-source project.

Yes, there will be teams that focus on specific items: core development, module development, support sites and so on. But these teams will conduct their business openly, and they will be open to input from non-members. If a XOOPS "end user" sees a problem, he can bring it to the attention of people who can address it.

What if you post an idea and it's ignored or rejected? That's always a possibility when there are a large number of people involved in a project. But you can keep trying, and enlist other people to help communicate your viewpoint.

What if I'm wrong? Well, the organizational structure currently being developed isn't carved in stone. If there are needs that aren't being met, the organization can be changed to meet those needs.

I don't think the module's ready for public release, but I'll if I can put together some documentation on how the swish-e integration is done.

Have you turned on the debug options (PHP, MySQL)? If so, do you get any error messages?
