You could customize the templates of the module and remove when they call icon image file.

In orden to write code, you must not have problem using gedit.
Anycase you could try another code editor on Linux: jedit (run on java) and kate; but I suppose that you use gnome, not kde.
But really gedit is a good code editor; I do not understand why you have problem using it.

In the folder /language/yourlanguage/mail_template/ are the templates for mail.
You could customize them

If you use gedit you must no have problem on write code. That notice is only about the use of a wysiwyg editors (in Linux nvu or quanta).
Try bluefish and phpedit too.

Protector 3.04
CBB 3.08 (with Frameworks 1.10 and xoopseditors)
SmartSection 2.13 (2.12: I had problems with the last version)
WiwiMod 0.8.3
