I think creating a block to hold a Google ad works best for a side block display (use the AdSense tower ad display) and a single, small banner for the top (by editing your template). I don't personally see any point in putting a Google AdSense banner code segment within Xoop's banner module. The AdSense banner is going to update with each page refresh anyway.

In reply to both questions, xdirectory is the best yellow pages type module I have been able to find for Xoops. However, it will have to be extensively tweaked to do what you want beyond the basics. It would be nice if it handled things like accepting payment for premium listings as well as some of the other things asked about --but it doesn't.

Do a search on "yellow page" here and look for a thread that links to an example site using xdirectory. That site owner modified the code pretty extensively and did a good job.

I started this thread with a review of most of the available (at the time) article modules based on my own tests of each. I posted the reviews since I had pretty much already done the work in order to decide which was best for my own purposes and I thought it might be helpful to others. To tell you the truth, I kind of regretted making the post almost immediately.

For one thing, I was flat wrong about a couple of things. For another, I got a bit of flak from some of the module writers who didn't agree with my testing methods and with my conclusions. That was partly my fault for having categories like "High power" which is more subjective than objective.

Point is, anyone trying to test modules on an "official" level is going to have a rather thankless job that will be extremely time-consuming.

For many sites the article management system used is extremely important. I would say that at the very least someone who is trying to decide which system to use should run the two or three most likely systems side-by-side on a test site to determine which is the best choice. Once you choose a system and have it running, it is very hard to switch if you make the wrong choice.

Thanks. I did notice that the x2t theme handles this correctly.

As much as I use Xoops, this has me stumped.

I want the mylinks module to open as the default page with a listing of all links at the top. No problem until you add a center center block with a newbb forum most recent topics. No matter what order setting you have for the forum's most recent topics, it displays ahead of the links.

I have seen some theme hacks to fix this, but I would rather not have yet another hacked page to keep track of.

Is there something easy I'm missing?

I have to take that back. I have the autologin hack and it apparently logs me in as admin even though I am coming from the Google link. When I tried logging out from my site and then going through the Google link, there was no edit option.

Now it is just a matter of a profile display that anyone can see from the site. So, no problem. Thanks.

Actually, anyone can follow the link and edit his profile. If it was just a matter of indexing his profile page it would not be a problem.

I followed the link directly from Google and edited his profile myself. I can email you the link, if you like.

I didn't find anything on this by searching, but I had a complaint from a user today who Googled his site and found that his profile from my XOOPS site was in Google and that the link takes anyone to his profile where they can edit his profile information. In other words, a link to his site was part of his profile and put his profile page into Google where anyone has access to his profile -no password, no security.

I have put userinfo.php and user.php as Disallows in robots.txt. Is there anything else I should be doing?

Maybe someone can add to this or fill in some detail, but this is what I did:

1) Leave everything on the original site until things have been working without problems on the new site for at least two weeks.

2) Back up the XOOPS database (structure and content) from the admin panel.

3) Make sure you have a list of of php and template files that you have hacked or modified. Either do a complete install of the latest XOOPS version at the new site or upload a backup of the old site from your own computer. I prefer a new, clean install. If you upload your site from your computer, you will need to edit your mainfile.php to reflect your new host's settings and you will have to make sure all permissions are correct. That is one reason I prefer a new install.

4) Restore your database using the admin panel.

5) Modules can either be installed fresh or uploaded from your computer if you have extensively modified them.

6) Fully test and bugfix before re-directing your domain to the new site.
