Re: Document Management Module

Hello,

The full-text search, using swish-e, is an area that needs some serious updating. While I had it working, it took a while to run, sometimes hung up, and I had to write code to display a summary of the text that it found. (I don't remember which version I added that feature to.) I have seen better open-source options available since then.

I think you hit upon the second priority: To use a better full-text search engine.

(The first priority is to update it for the newest version of Xoops, of course.)

Upgrading to version 1.95 shouldn't be a problem as I built in an update manager that looks at the installed version and makes all of the database changes for you. One of my goals was to not have to stay after work to do updates, so I spent a lot of time working on it. If the system permissions are setup properly, you can even upload the updates into the DMS, from the web browser, and perform the entire update in under a minute.

Regards,

Brian

Hello reifsnyderb,

I have been using this mod version 1.91 for about two years and is still working fine under Xoops 2.4.4. One feature I couldnt get to work is to enable to document search using swish-e script to be able to search the content of documents which is quite vital these days. I have been looking at other software available. I Have created an intranet based on Xoops since 2009 and is still working.

But like most if not all Xoops mods, the maintenance or development is a major concern thus I tend not to push and apply upgrades or Xoops core and other mods, since I am afraid things will be broken up. I however keep testing before implementing and welcome new xoops development. I have also commented on this mods so if you can search xoops site you can read them and have other suggestions if you plan to continue.

Re: Document Management Module

Hello,

I am planning on posting the latest version tomorrow sometime. I'll provide a link to it from here. I think I was wrong and it is version 1.95 and not 1.96. I need to find and check one more cd-rom.

Brian

Re: Document Management Module

Peekay,

You are probably right about the interaction making it a derivative work. I don't have any problem with keeping it GPL.

Brian

flipse,

I'll have to retrieve it from a CD-ROM and post it somewhere. I'll set aside some time this weekend to do so.

Brian

Re: Document Management Module

Peekay,

I am seriously considering updating this module. However, I need to determine how to allocate my time.

Since it is a module, developed for Xoops, I really don't know how the GPL applies as to whether I can change the license or not. It is my understanding that, in some cases, a GPL'd project can have the license changed as long as all of the developers agree. As I am the only developer this isn't a problem. (If memory serves, somebody else did contribute some code at one time. But, I am positive that it was eventually discarded as the project moved on. I'd have to check the documentation.) I know that I don't know if a license change, on this module, is possible due to it's interaction with Xoops. However, due to the open nature of PHP code, ease of copying code, etc., changing the license would probably be pointless anyhow.

I am thinking about doing something similar to what you suggest: A different download fee for different document limits.

Regards,

Brian

Hello,

Thank you for the words of encouragement. Is there any way to gauge how many people would be interested in this module being updated?

Regards,

Brian

Re: Document Management Module

Hello,

Adding blocks that show what is new, in different categories, would be pretty easy. Improving and/or simplifying administrative tasks is also a possibility. I also noticed that the released version is pretty old as the most recent version is 1.96.

I originally wrote the DMS module at work to replace Documentum, a package that my former employer reportedly paid around $500,000 for. It has done so and has performed very well. The last time I checked, it was handling over 250,000 documents and had over 1,000 registered users.

In a few days, I will be self-employed. Assuming that there is enough interest, I am considering hosting a website to provide this module for download and build a development environment. I will probably add some sort of moderate licensing or download fee for commercial use and/or production systems. For test systems, it will remain free.

Edit: One possibility is to license by the projected number of documents. i.e. Under 10,000 documents--free

Assuming that there is enough interest, I will take version 1.96, adapt it to run in the modern Xoops environment, and update the version to version 2.0. Afterwards, I could provide improvements and/or updates as the need arises.

Regards,

Brian

Document Management Module

Hello,

I am the developer of the DMS Module (https://xoops.org/modules/repository/singlefile.php?cid=21&lid=1135). I was wondering if there is any interest for this module to be updated, improved, etc.?

Regards,

Brian
