I was not aware that LDAP need username instead of e-mail.
So this should be ok
By Name I was thinking about "real name", but if we need to keep username so its just a matter of words (name or real name)
My worries relly on the fact that XOOPS is loosing the track.
Because it is not going on with the development of the web 2.0.
Xoops is quite the same as some years ago, and this is very bad.
This topic did not got many replies, because even the community is blind about this topic
The result is that XOOPS will loose users.
Take a look at Alexa.com and see the XOOPS visitors along 2002 and 2006.
in 2006 the usage is unstable and not growing so fast
Now take a look at drupal, is growing very very fast
Because drupal is going along the web 2.0

Hello, I´m a XOOPS user for quite some time. I´m not a developer neither an expert.
There are somethings that could be improved in the user module:
1 - there are no need for username. We need just NAME.
2 - the login should be: e-mail / password
3 - avatar is a old word. Photo is better.
4 - Pixel limitation to your photo prevent most people to be able to upload their photo. This should have a resize feature, like many other systems do.
5 - PM is an unknown word for many people. Send Message is more easy to understand.
6 - we need a buddy list feature
7 - There should be a shortcut at the user page to add any type of contend available on the system (news, links, articles, dowloads) This improve a personal sense for the user, like he is adding his own contend.
8 - You need to re-think the user menu concept. View account/Edit account is a old concept. Eg: My page/profile is better
I know that someone could reply: just change the "translation" messages or make a hack, make your own module, XOOPS is a development framework, and so on
But the fact is that XOOPS is getting old and not looking at the new conepts and paradigms involvind internet today

But what I say is not just about XOOPS core. Its about a new logic that will become mainstream sooner or latter.
So its about XOOPS and the modules.
I know its possible to customize now. Some things can be done hacking, templating and so on.
But I think that would be good if we'd pay more attention to the fact that the "social network" will play a central role from now on.
Take an example:

many people dont upload avatar because they are not able to fit the requirements of pixel size.
Instead it could be like that:
max kb size
user upload image, system resize it with normal size (the avatar) and small size (to be placed along every comment and message on the system)

we dont need really changes, but "changes". Re-organization of many things.
eg:

profile integrated: at your own page in the system you can post news, insert data on modules, have personal, profissional and other kinds of profiles, also you have your owm image gallery. post in your own blog.
The images, data, messages , texts, blogs can be also found on a menu item like now.
Community: instead forum we could also have a community. you subscribe to one, create one, and can view others who subscribed too.

I have 2 XOOPS site at one server
one is 2.0.6 and its running since some months ago (psico.net/cuidar)
the other is 2.0.7.3 and it was instaled some days ago
both of them are fresh installs, and have no extra modules.
All my blocks are gone and I got the same error
SELECT b.* FROM xoops_newblocks b, xoops_block_module_link m WHERE m.block_id=b.bid AND b.isactive=1 AND b.visible=1 AND m.module_id IN (0,-1) AND b.bid IN (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15) ORDER BY b.weight,b.bid
Error number: 1030
Error message: Got error 28 from table handler
I went to phpmyadmin and then to those tables (newblocks , block_module_link) and clicked at the "repair" funcion
Now both sites are ok.
I got scared because of this problem.
I wonder how this can be caused... at other site someone speculate about server overload
here I did not found any explications of this problem

This is a great "hack" or addon!
Because many users can't create their pages, this allow them to use the "friendly" link
