Image manager

Ok, so we have an image manager...

I have never used this and have no clue what it is.

Could someone fill me in on what it is and what it is intended for?

I have used gallery sites to handle all of my pictures and haven't even looked at the image manager.

I would like to get a decent idea what it is intended for and how to use it.

I guess the purpose was to give module developers a central place to store all their images. The only module that I have seen use the system image manager is publisher module.
