Notifications problem: mailing issue

Hi, lots of people are subscribed to receive notifications about new ad postings on catads on my website, so whenever I approve a new ad to get it published it fails to send notifications to all the subscribed members and I get a blank or connection timeout page after waiting quite a while. Maybe I should specify some other mailing method that would manage to mail things faster?
