How can I REQUIRE certain new user info @ registration time?

What is the easiest way (module I can install, some code I can edit?) to REQUIRE certain information at the time new users register for my XOOPS site.

I would LOVE to use extended profiles, but it's too convoluted to try and get to work for PHP4.

I am running XOOPS 2.0.16, PHP 4.4.4 and I forgot what version of MySQL on a linux server (1and1.com hosting).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
