I've just bought a new maxtor 40 gig drive and an icy box hard drive enclosure.

When I plugged the drive in Windows XP said 'found mass storage device' and 'device is installed ready for use'

However, I click to my computer and the drive is nowhere to be seen. I think this is because the new drives ship unformatted, and Windows does not recognise unformatted drives.

Anyone know how to make Windows recognise the drive?

- rightclick on "MyComputer"
- Choose "Manage"
- Choose "Disk Management"

It should be listed there. If it is Rightclick it and Activate/Initialize/... it. (Sorry don´t have the name since i have no uninitialized disk at hand at the moment.

Thanks for the help Bender, but the the drive is not listed there. Might it work if I opened the case and connected it directly?

Are you shure it is not listed as something like "Removable media" in explorer?

If you connect it directly probably it will work but if case is sealed you may lose any warranty!

Yup dead sure. According to windows, the thing I just spent £50 on does not actually exist. A good point though

Any model info? Also did you get them separate or drive in the box?

If you have access to jumpers try to play with master/slave/cableselect settings...
