I've been using XOOPS for quite awhile now, not in production, but in development (hehe, that's how I have the Module Developer rank ). Anywho, I've never messed with the News module to any large extent, but after testing News 1.2, I can say I'm not the largest fan of how the module functions, or the usability.

No offense intended towards Mith or Herve, but a few things seem rather cumbersome and counter-intuitive, such as the Permissions system (my biggest gripe), as well as the News blocks.

I'm not saying it's a bad module, it's just not exactly my cup of tea. So, before I go about modifying the module to fit my needs, I wanted to see what you other users use for your News posting needs?

If you use modules other than News 1.x, please post, I'd be intrigued to hear what other alternatives there are.

I use AMS . I think there are a things in the News module that could be improved, but for the most part I think it is a cracker of a module. I do agree that the permissions system could be streamlined a little though. It's always under development though, no need to tell you that though bd_csmc .

Just wondering what do you find counter-intuitive about the permissions system? It might be a little clunky, but I wouldn't say it is counter-intuitive, perhaps apart from listing the webmasters group as they have approve, submit and view permissions regardless of what you set these permissions to.

having to specify the webmaster group really burns me up, lol... anyways, i guess clunky is a better term

just really bugs me that i have to go into the permission interface for each group, set the permissions for groups in each *section* separately, which means multiple trips to the permission screen due to how they setup the submit form.

i'd think that might possibly fall into the counter-intuitive category

also, i haven't tested it yet (need to), but i remember awhile back when xoops.org was revamped, there were several news categories that were listed in the Submit News form. i would fill out the form, submit, and receive an error that i didn't have permission to access that area.

that's a noticeable oversight, which pretty much discourages users from even submitting news, if they keep running into news categories masquerading as legit options.

AH, i just tested it again (here on xoops.org), error still occurs. those categories should only be included on a per-group basis, not a list-all-and-tell-the-user-later

aaaanywho.

brash, i haven't tried AMS yet. it was built on the News module, correct? gimme some info

Suunds like your gripes with the permissions system are about the same as mine. The way the submit form is structured is what I was refering to when I said there was room for streamlining . However I think setting the permissions for each group, for each of the approve, submit and view categories is necessary to keep the permissions granularity in the module. No doubt a pain in the rear end when there are a lot of topics and/or groups, but I can't think of a better way of doing this while maintaining the granularity.

Displaying topics that a user does not have submit permissions to when submitting an article has been a dislike of mine for a while. This has been fixed in AMS, and only the topics that the user has submit permissions to are shown. As Mith did all the coding work in AMS, I wouldn't be suprised if this feature showed up in the next version of News.

AMS was built on the News 1.2 code base, and you can see a lot of that in it. It is still a VERY different beast though. I could yabba on for ages about it, but you'd probably fall asleep/loose interest well before I was finished . Have a look athttp://ams.it-hq.org and register and you'll get full Admin access to AMS (apart from module blocks). Seeing for yourself makes a much better teacher than what my words alone could ever do.

Re: What do you use to post News?

Well, I am new to XOOPS and PHP illiterate.
I have tried a few modules. The original news module that came with Xoops, then I upgraded to 1.2.1 I think it is. I tried wf-sections, couldn't figure it out. Tried Edito, couldn't figure it out.

Ended up for now with news 1.2 and the spotlite module to show on front page. Wish I could show mor than one article in spotlite though.

I still try new modules as I find them and will keep going back to the ones that I have problems with as I learn the ins and outs of Xoops.

i think most of the article module authors try to accomplish a lot, which isn't bad, but they often do a bad job of making it an easy-to-use module, lol...

and yeah, wf-sections has always irked me, i'm waiting for a major version change before i try it again.

checking out Brash's module now

omg, AMS appears to kick total a**. lol... article versioning, the ability to show external links, links to forum discussions, etc etc... wow...

brash, you and mith did a killer job, this is the type of module that many CMSes are missing.

i'm impressed

Aw shucks bd_csmc . Did you have a play with the audience, or banner features? What about the totally rejigged article manager in the amin menu .

You'll be able to have mulitple spotlight blocks in AMS. You have three Article blocks in AMS, and you can configure each one to display just about any information you want about your articles.

Is there a method to import my current news articles into AMS?

Downloading now will check it out.
