using <{$xoops_var}> type variables in custom blocks

howdy!

i am using 2.0.7.

in the system blocks, i can use, for example, <{$xoops_uname}> to get the logged in user name.

this doesn't seem to work with custom blocks.

i also tried making a custom php block with
<{$xoops_var}>
$xoops_var
global $xoops_var

but none of these worked.

is there any way to access these variables in a custom block?!

Smarty tags aren't available in custom blocks.
