What is the fucntion of "Sync forum /topic index" in newbb

"Sync forum /topic index" is an interesting option that i have seen in newbb. Could anyone tell me what kind sync it does. Since if there is a mismatch in data, then that means that its bug in the newbb or else is it some way of cache management internally that needs to be refreshed.

Could someone give some clearity in this regard.
