Internal server error when emailing confirmations

I've tried every single which way, but I cannot get XOOPS to properly send a confirmation email when a new user registers.

There is a mail server running on the same machine as Xoops, but nothing seems to work, not even PHP's mail().

Any ideas?

Edit: Ok, so mail() requires sendmail to be up and running, and this is a Windows box. Still, the SMTP or SMTPAuth options should work, but for whatever reason they don't.
