You want to show the user's groups in the forum? As in e.g. under the rank, show the usergroups? There might be quite a lot of them if a user is in many usergroups.

For users to apply for membership of various usergroups you'd need to hack the core extensively - which is probably why noone has answered yet.

As a workaround, you can create custom user ranks. Go to System Admin -> User Ranks -> Add a New Rank. Make the new rank special so you can assign it irrespective of no. of posts.

However, you will have to assign the user rank one by one for each registered member from the Edit User Profile. Users cannot assign the rank themselves. If you have just a few members, this might not be a problem.

Also, you must remember that the User Ranks are independent of User Groups, i.e. they do not have anything to do with each other--just because you assigned a Webmaster Rank to a user, it does not mean he belongs to the Webmaster Group, and vice-versa.

I'm working on a hack to show user groups. It's based in smarty, you can add it to your newbb_thread template, for example over rank image.
I have some problems but i think i'll have it this week.
I'll publish it in module hack's forum.
