I'm designing a new theme for my site with a new matching set of templates. For convenience, I am planning to 'download' the template set from my local server and upload it to the live site as tar.gz. Because I have other modules installed in the local, the template set will have templates for modules not yet installed in the live site.

I am planning to delete the unused templates from the tar.gz file, of course, before upload. But I'm curious, what happens when I upload it and it contains templates not found in the live site?

It won't hurt having templates that don't have corresponding modules installed at this time. If you ever do install the modules, then there will be a generate link that shows up for new modules in the template manager.
