Re: XOOPS Basic Module Pack RC coming soon for testing & feedback
by Shine on 2012/5/8 8:46:31

OK, what is the purpose of a basic module pack? To my opinion if a user download xoops, he/she can install basic modules to run a basic website.
To my opinion and knowledge a basic website 80% contains:
- News
- Content
- Links
- Download
- Contact
- Forum

With these basic bugfree compatible modules a user can create his (hers) first startoff website.
These basic modules were also the basic modules Xoops 'once upon a time' added with the core as a starting point for new users. It was a good, simple but very functional module package.

OK, these the differences:

1) Core Pack: modules coming with the Core. Currently these are: Protector, Profile, PM. For XOOPS 2.6.0 I hope we'll add "Content" and "Contact" functionality (modules to be selected).

2) Basic Module Pack: most popular modules that are pretty much covering needs for most standard Websites - hopefully to be finalized in the next couple of weeks.

3) Specialized Module Packs (e.g. Community, Intranet, Corporate, eCommerce) - based on the Basic Module Pack with some extra modules.

The "Basic module pack" can be easily interpreted to "Core Modules".

And if we reduce the number of "Basic modules" to about 4-5 of the needed ones then yes I do believe they should be included with core. This will reduce the number of "branches" as long as we try to maintain them with new features or allow for add-ins/plug-ins and such.

Then you can have separate module packs for intended purposes and they make more sense. IMHO

I may agree with redheadedrod to remove even gallery and download module from pack but then we should have one full feature and bug free content module that can be changed to answer different needs. i mean one can use it as simple as news but another can change it to a gallery or download module.

Publisher, newbb, tdmdownloads, all good choices.
Here's a wild suggestion, how about integrating the smallworld social mod into the core, with FB and Twitter functionality as options?

At least a nod to social networking is called for in future efforts.
