Re: Developers: Say no to IE v6 and stop developing for it.

Peekay,

I don't think anyone's necessarily saying that users shouldn't be able to see the site if they use IE6, I think the point is just as ghia states...

I prefer using the small javascript from browser-update.org
le="color: #000000"><?php <script type="text/javascript"> var $buoop = {} $buoop.ol = window.onload; window.onload=function(){ if ($buoop.ol) $buoop.ol(); var e = document.createElement("script"); e.setAttribute("type", "text/javascript"); e.setAttribute("src", "http://browser-update.org/update.js"); document.body.appendChild(e); } </script>

This continues to let them use the site but just puts up a single line message at the top that let's them know they should really consider upgrading.

I've quit supporting IE6 since March. Every site I create/design now has a warning for IE6 and will block them from visiting the site. I use a lot of CSS3 and HTML5, and I won't use a lot of hacks for 1 browser. I only support the latest versions of browsers, so for Opera (which I use) I only support 10.60, Safari 5 and so on. I let my sites degrade - you should reward those that use new products, not the ones who use crap.

And a lot of those users still on IE6 probably use an illegal version of Windows.

Depending on the techniques used, they will see the site with some apparent problems, which may vary from alignment to some invisible elements. In general they will be able to see all the infoermation but badly presented. It is not so that they are totally locked out from the site.

But people should understand that when their software supplier of choice does not adhere to the standards, they deprive themselves from a better browser and internet expierience.
I provide mosttimes a notice on the bottom: "Viewed at its best with FireFox".

In 2010 the estimate of total internet users was 1.9 billion.

If seven percent of those users still use IE6, that's about 133 million people.

So you're not going to let them see your website because... ?

catz you are right. the problem is that almost all my customers want their sites (modules and themes) to work with the ie6. they even pay extra for the work.
I hate this browser too and I really see no reason why people do not use even IE7 (except the companies) .
I have stopped the support for IE6 for my free themes.
