You could try DMS from here in the dev forge.

From what I remember it is a little complex to set up, but may suit your needs.

Any simple downloads module will do the work.

Besides that, I sometimes use News, just for a matter of simplicity. My customers learn how to use News, then they use it for everything. Notices, articles and downloads. They only have to learn one module, instead of one for articles and another for downloads.

Which module would you recommend for file storage of word docs and xcel files so users can view and download them.
