Pesonally, I would love to have someone's assessment and comparison of both branches of the XOOPS forum software: CBB and Newbbex.

I've been using CBB and all the updates since it came out. I have my own reasons for that, but would be very interested in other opinions.

I actually prefer newbbex for a couple of reasons

1. It works straight out of the box.
2. You don't need to add Frameworks, xoopseditors, etc.
3. You don't have to wait while the page loads 100 items.
4. Has a very useful Topics block.

The only shortcoming is the lack of RSS feeds, and I believe hervet is working on that.

gestroud covered about everything and also lets not forget that it works with both XOOPS 2.0.x and 2.2.x so user don't get dizzy about what version to use with his/her site

Please can you explain what you mean by this as I genuinely do not understand

I use CBB, btw, mainly because I found it before I found newbbex and because I wanted to offer RSS to my site's users from day one.

Sure, it is a pain having to upload new xoopeditors and Frameworks with each CBB update as they are hefty uploads, but since other modules use them........

What I meant when I said that you don't have to wait for a hundred items to download is this:

On almost every XOOPS site that I've encountered that uses CBB, the pages tend to freeze while "items" are being downloaded. The number usually starts at around 100, sometimes more, and the page can't be scrolled or have anything done to it until everything (whatever it is) downloads. The forum on this site is a perfect example. I barely post here anymore because I'm tired of waiting for forum pages to load. I don't experience that problem with newbbex.

As far as installing frameworks, xoopseditors, etc., the only modules that I know of that need to have them installed are Article, Wordpress, Tag, one of the wiki modules, and maybe Planet. Most other modules really don't need the extra files.

NOTE: like david said, CBB and newbbex are both great modules. This is NO disparagement to CBB. It's a very powerful module, and I understand the need for the extra files. I just prefer the simplicity and functionality of newbbex.

Mmmm..... and if someone wanted to switch from the latest CBB to the latest Newbbex, can that be done?

My own personal experience is that CBB has more features, but that you tend to turn off some features as you realize they are not necessary and/or used by your forum visitors.

Again, it depends on what you want for your forum. I agree, both are good. Still, how much problem to switch?

I miss or didn't find one important feature (for me) in newbbex and that is the facility to join two or more topics.

Anyhow newbbex runs very fast and smooth, good job.

i'd like to know how easy it is to change from newbb, since, unlike newbb, this one has no problems with smarty in php5.

Thank you Herve! If only all modules could be installed and work with the out of the box ease as this one does. I was even able to change the name in the files and have it still install perfectly.

I am using Newbb2.02 and I want to change over to Newbbex. I'm using XOOPS 2.0.16. Does anyone know of an easy way to change over without losing data?
