I certainly don't begrudge you charging money for your themes (good luck at $50!), but in keeping with the open source, sharing context of XOOPS, you should indicate that in your post. Having felt tricked, I wouldn't buy it regardless of how fantastic it is.

here we go again....
we charge for the themes depending on how much work it cost to make it compatible with xoops.

our previous theme cost only $20.00 because it had less work. i think you are mad because we are not doing this for Free.and unfortunaly everybody think that open source and things related with open source should be free.

the other reason why we make this theme for $50.00 is because in intended for a Business website. now my question to you.. HOW much do you charge your client for a Business website??
i will presume from $200 to $1000 minimun, so spendng $50.00 in our theme and installing XOOPS for free in your client hosting it will give you a big profit in your pocket. so in other words we are simplifiying the life of a designer who want to deliver a quality XOOPS site.

for the download module.. we are using rha7downloads but is not working properly, so once the payment is received we are sending the files manually by e-mail

i think the reason some people will disagree is because of the idea of Open source and the definition people have.

almost everybody hear GPL or Open source and they think all means the same = FREE wich is not 100% true.

the other reason people will disagree is because they are too use to get FREE themes on the themes section of this website. i think there is nothing wrong in having both option (Free and paid)it will actually make XOOPS a stronger CMS and probably we are making the road for other designer to join XOOPS and make better XOOPS theme, if they charge or not it will be their desicion.

but at least we will have more quality themes options.

Same here! I don't mind at all that you charge! But be straight forward about it!!!!! I felt tricked as well!

I think I would want to see this (or any) theme in action before spending $50 to find out certain modules don't work or look like hell if they do work.

No problem with paying for something, but a screen shot does not come close to cutting it for me.

I agree with you with this, however, you didn't mention the other part of GPL. According to GPL, you can redistribute any file , so once I(Not me ) buy this I(Not me ) can spread this theme all over the world, and you certainly will not recieve a penny of it since I(not me ) will do it for free.

Note: When I used the "I" expression, I didn't mean that I would do it, but Just wanted to give an exmaple.

Actually, you can't distribute it legally for free as images are covered by copyright.

Also he says:
Quote:

THis tells us that the original producer might be someoneelse, so depending on the production type(free or fee) of the original theme, I can reproduce the same theme if the original theme was free.
Also If he hasn't taken the picture of the ocean by himself(which is prorably true), Then there is no need to wory about,. If he has found the picture off the internet, then he has no right to claim it his own!

A common misconception is that open source must be free, or at least, that charging for it is somehow morally wrong. This is not so:

Quote:

When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for this service if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs; and that you know you can do these things.

- Preamble to the GNU General Public License

Emphasis mine. Spending $50 to get a good look and feel for your otherwise free XOOPS site is still an amazingly good deal IMHO.

Then tell me Madfish, are you willing to pay? And I not only mean for the themes but also for modules? Let's say you have a nice XOOPS site with 5 active modules á 20 dollar per module, a nice bought theme á 20 dollar, makes 120 dollar in total,..mm.

Yes I am willing to pay - I put money into the AMS module that Brash/Mith worked on, because I wanted to see it released to the wider community (you can check that on the IT Headquarters site). I have also donated to XOOPS (you can check with Herko if you feel like it, it is not obvious due to my 'doc writer' label). So: Yes, I have 'put my money where my mouth is'.

Please understand that I am not advocating a move towards only-for-money software or themes. My point is that charging for GPL software is entirely legitimate, and we should not beat up on people that do that - because we often do.

XOOPS still has a few key gaps as far as modules go, and paid development projects might be another way to fill some of the holes. For example, completion of an ecommerce module would be a huge boost to XOOPs.

IMHO
{
* (repeating from others) - nothing bad with themes for moneys, but - this fact and cost must be stated in news
* this theme doesn't cost $50, as previous - $29... $15-$20, maybe. It will not be unique (for single buyer) and doesn't contain nothing cool in theme-design... Even my 0DC-* themes from httpp://themes.xoops2.ru are better
}

once again the stupid dialog about charging of a theme is happening again...
dont you have tired about this?

xoops community needs more elegant themes [because the most are craps] and if somebody likes something is not a big deal to pay some $ for this...

What the hell is wrong with SHARING?? I hear alot of people telling that it's okay when people ask money for themes,,but what is wrong with sharing?

Is money the engine of this cms,,no it isn't! It is people freely share knowledge with each other! One guy makes a piece of code, gives it to a designer who gives the code a nice jacket.

Aaargh,.,.

Ja, ja! We must not allow Kapitalism in either the XOOPS or the open source community. All contributions must be free to all and regulated by the Central Politburo. There will be no private property or any incentive to increase one's wealth. All themes and modules must be made freely available to our fellow citizens or the creators will be ostracized and they and their familes exiled to the gulags. Marx wrote on this extensively in The Communist Manifesto. If memory serves, there is even a passage exclusively dedicated to XOOPS and free themes.

Guys that fact is that everybody is entitled to there point of view, but according to the GNU licence Free means Freedom not free of price. People are entitled to create something and give it for free, they can charge for it, or the can keep it for themselves. As long as nobody is breaking any rules, why make all the fuss? As already stated, many people will happily pay for a good theme, so because of that paid themes should have a place in the xoops.org news section. If you don't want to pay for a theme you don't, you go look at the many free themes out there. Open source is all about choice.
Now can we keep this comment section for comments about the theme in question. If anybody would like to discuss the free/paid theme debate further, please start a topic in the forums, but leave this space for comments on the actual theme, and not how it should or shouldn't be distributed.

I love it. You got guys cursing up a storm and causing general controversy - insulting people and making all kinds of accusations about plagarism, etc. etc. etc, and nobody really says or does a thing about it. They just pussyfoot and tiptoe around them. But when a valid subject comes up, here come the Thought Police.

unfortunaly am not able to edit the NEWS i posted, so i cannot change that this one is a paid theme...

for module compability bluewaterx was designer to be compatible with the modules that will fit for a business site and it may be compatible with some other one.

if it does not fit for your module, all you have to do is edit the CSS or Templates in your module and that all.

with all this controversi.. you are only making designer go away and keep the Free Crapy old themes... like i said in a previous post.. there is ntohing wrong with having options..

FREE THEMES AND PAID THEMES... you have the option. before you have only 1 option.. the FREE themes wich were not always nice ones...

now if this controversi continue.. i wil stop doing themes and everybody will be happy and keep the crapy themes like they like it before.

for copyright.. of course once someone buy it it may be ditributed underground, we are aware of that.. thats why we include a readme file wich the owner should follow some copyright rules.

Actually gestroud, the situation was handled. If it comes up again, we'll handle it again. We are in the process of defining formal procedures for how to deal with such issues. When those procedures are complete, they will be published for all to see.

The issue here is not the content of the discussion or even so much how it is being discussed. The issue is where it's being discussed.

Quote:
Topics - Please stay on topic. For general conversation, please use the General Discussions forum.

Comments are for posting comments, not having debates or even requesting support. Again, we are working on updating XOOPSiquette and this too will be addressed.

If you want to discuss the pros and cons of Free vs Paid themes, you are more than welcome to, but please do it in the forums and keep your discussion within the guidelines of XOOPSiquette.

Just a clarification... We are not the thought police, the censors, or the official question answerers, contrary to popular misconception. We are moderators. Please see the following definition if you are not clear about what it is we do... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forum_moderator

Everyon is free to express their thoughts and views here. When rules start being broken, we step in. Other than that, we are just like everyone else... XOOPSers. Please do not insult us by calling us the Thought police. We don't want to step in so often, but apparently we have to. If everyone followed the rules, our "roles" would not be needed.

I hope this clears things up.

Best Regards,

James

At what point did free=crappy? I don't mean to extend the free versus pay debate, but I don't think this claim should slide by without comment.

If anyone cares to sift through the hundreds of free themes available here in the Themes Library, I think you will find some excellent themes. To equate free with crappy is an insult to all those who donated their efforts to supplying some very good themes. Themes by 7-Dana, just for one example, are very well designed and are top quality.
