Re: Gainesville, Florida Local GuideFor the test runs, I was trying out several directory modules. The only thing was that not all of the listings had physical addresses...some were online sites. The extra fields were not needed. Also, I wanted something more visual...a wall of text was not appealing...especially in the list view.
Meanwhile I was using a photo module for the local pictures. Hmm, why not just combine the two and just make categories for photos, on-line sites and physical locations? I chose MyAlbum-P because it was the only photo editor that worked...I was unable to load ImageMagick or NetPBM which are required by the other photo modules. A plus was the pic-up photo...a way to place random images in a block. This allowed me to have integrated banner ads for the site. Also, it was nice having one simple method for the end-user to submit their information and photos. (I still need to clean up the templates somewhat for this module...the submitter info graphics beneath the title is somewhat distracting.)
I did the same for the forums. Before, I had a module for Classified Ads (CatAds), another for a Calendar (Pi-Cal) and then another for the Forum (NewBB). The site was getting too cluttered and confusing. So these were combined into the forum with separate categories. Not as specialized as the individual modules...but streamlined.
I had tried the same with the Headlines (XHLD) and the Articles (News) modules...to combine them into one page called “News”. I wanted the Articles to be at the top of the page with the Spotlight feature on and have the Headlines (from the RSS feeds) be in a block below that. I could not get that layout working right away...I probably just need to spend some time playing with the templates. It would be nice if these two modules were combined and called “SuperNews” (hint, hint).
I like the MyAlbum-P method of uploading photos...one button! I wish this was available in every module, especially the News. The built-in Image manager is okay for the webmaster, but is too confusing for the end user. I haven’t looked into the other editors that can be incorporated...do they have this feature?
Granted, if the site grows too large, I would probably have to stratify back to the individual modules for each area. At the same time, I want to keep the site simple (easy to navigate and use) and "clean" (not cluttered) keeping the user in mind.
Re: Gainesville, Florida Local GuideAhh, Gainesville! I lived there, once upon a time, when I worked for the band "Blackfoot".
I remember a couple of great restaurants "Mama Lo's" which had great cheap soul food and plenty of it, and "Pres and Ed's Barbecue" which had the best ribs and the hottest BBQ sauce on the planet. They also had BBQ'ed Goat, which I could never bring myself to try.
There was also "The Great Southern Music Hall" which had some fantastic shows. What a venue.
It was a great town back then, but the heat! Dayum!
