Not sure you have done with the writer field, it would be better if the writer' names were only selected from another table, similar to the news category selection. This way will keep uniformality/uniqueness of the writer.
The same writer might be shown twice if his/her name were entered manually with a slight difference (Joe Jones vs. Joe J. Jones)
Just a suggestion on usability. 
You may have realized this and taken into account.
While creating the writer table, a short bio on the writer would be good. So when people click on the writer name, not only the articles would be listed but his/her short bio would also be listed.

I noticed that the latest news version has that feature, but the only problem is, this is running on a college newspaper site, where many of the writers are only contributing, and everchanging. So, to enter them all in to say a dropdown menu, wouldn't really have been efficient.

Perhaps a good idea is to merge the left and the right column in the actual left column.
You can also have all blocs even a user want to test or use these themes

The left and right columns have been separated to their respective sides.
It has replaced the original download.

One problem though:
There is one block with highest priority=1 that in the other themes are shown on top, but in ex.min theme it shows up at the bottom for some reason.
This is a ordinary textblock, nothing fancy at all, but as it contains introduction for my site I do need to have it on top.

Re: ex.min themeThis theme is great ! I think I've finally found the theme that I want to use for the website I am building for work here at my university.
However, there is one issue I have:
I use a custom block that is centered on the top page. Your theme, however, is made so that a module appears at the center, and a block that is centered appears at the bottom.
Is there a way to change this ? I don't want to use news or another module as the top/intro page, because the content is static.
