Themes: Barr Family website (new theme)

The content of this site won't mean much to any of you, but you may like the new theme I built for it, called "bluebarr." It's based on my earlier Sunshine theme, which in turn is based on Ackbarr's "karate redux" theme. If anyone is interested to use the theme, let me know (by commenting on this news item) and I'll zip it up and submit it to xoops.org.

Theme notes:
The random quote that appears in the banner area is actually a center-right block, which means you can't use center-right blocks on the rest of the site. You could put a news ticker, stock quotes, or anything else up there, as long as the height of the block isn't so big as to wreck the banner area.

When a user or admin logs in to the site, the View Account Edit Account, Logout, and Admin Menu links (which normally appear in the User Menu) appear in the same row where the Register Now link appears. Therefore, I have hacked the User Menu to show only Notifications and Inbox, and have renamed the User Menu to "Messaging."

The comments are owned by the author. We aren't responsible for their content.

I really like the design and colors of the site. Really nifty job. I'm pretty sure that there'll be some folks looking for the theme.

BTW, I imagine it'll be nice to have a lawyer in the family...

I don't like the theme. It isn't anything special and the colors are ugly. It is not good for my eyes ...

You HAD to post that? I dont post here very often but I must say, that is VERY rude of you. I think your best bet is to click the X in the upper right of your screen & shut down your computer. I was always told as I was growing up, if you cant say anything good, dont say anything at all. Then again, maybe you still have some growing up to do.

If you like it so much, why don't you make themes like this ? Your site looks really clean and colors are great... change to Barr Family theme ... because you like it so much.

I don't mind if someone doesn't like the theme. No problem. Not everyone will like any particular thing. For example, many might think that the theme of www.rapscena.com is a steaming pile of crap. However, it would be more helpful to give suggestions for improvement instead of just calling it a steaming pile.

(Two other notes on this theme: the style.css includes code to match the newbb2 dropdown menus to the rest of the theme. And the idea of hijacking the center-right block isn't my original invention; I learned of it in a xoops.org forum somewhere...)

I'll zip the thing up tonight or tomorrow and submit for any other Xoopsers that share my awful taste.

@ Bahattee:
Telling someone to stfu (shut the f*ck up) is very rude and goes well beyond the limits of courteous conversation. And, you are basically telling others that you are free to say anything you like, but they need to stfu if they have an opinion? I don't get it...

I agree... keep bad comments to yourself. I thought this site (especially the development side of it) was for encouragement and constructive critisim to promote and help develope this great portal. If you think something is bad then either point out something that may need improvement or do not comment.
And I would hope that if you are to be critical then you should have in mind that you are trying to help, not put down.

I myself was going to post a comment here to praise the theme and was put off by the comments. I am impressed with the use of the middle right block. The layout is very easy on the eye and all the headers etc standout well.
I will be waiting for this theme to be available.

It's a great looking theme! Some creativity goes a long way. I always though about taking a theme and becoming creative with left and right blocks based on weight or something...keep up your work, regardless of good or bad votes!

Someone makes a theme, asks for feedback, gets a reply "I don't like it" and you attack him?

Granted, the subsequent reply was using bad language, but Toddlynn's attack was out of line, I think.

Yes, constructive criticism is better than destructive criticism, but all Bahattee said was that he didn't like it because of the colours. It wasn't like he said "omg, that sucks so much that it blows at the same time" - he merely stated his opinion and the reason for it.

Looking at the various themes out there, I can see a number of people, who are not told that their work sucks - even though it does - and that is sometimes a pity. There are good ways and there are bad ways, but I don't think that Bahattee's (original) reply was out of line.

I wholkheartedly agree with Mithrandir here. If there is no room for critisism, the there is no room for improvement as the status quo would become the standard.

The rule for this is quite simple: be respectful to another's work and opinions. That should guide all your posts, critical or positive. I feel that Bahattee's original reply followed this rule.

Now, lets get back on topic and give feedback on this theme!

Some never learn. I think that Bahattee's comment is neither constructive nor productive and he shows no respect to somebodys work. I don't think that beerMe posts his work on this site for someone to blatanly disrespect it. If there is something Bahattee don't agree with/dislike, then he should explain this in a respectful manner.

I used the idea of repositioning one of the blocks on my site in the header several months ago, after a forum request to do the same it's a FAQ here in case others are interested.

Regarding theme appraisal: The artistic/ aesthetic content of any theme is only a part of the release. The functional features are another and I think it's useful to note that this theme does present some interesting features that are worth a THANK-YOU!

Well done beerMe, I think many user will find this a useful theme and they should easily be able to change the colours to suit their personal taste.

Why do you see only bad things ? How many people I helped with their problems ? Count this, not only how many times did I say domething like "stfu".

Ok, why I don't like this theme:

- the font is ugly and too big
- all lines are straight ...
- looks almost same like default (layout)
- you see in one second that this is made of Xoops
- bad pictures (including logo)
- white font on the dark blue background ...
- the newbb menus work bad in IE
- it is to monotone (yellow color makes it awfull for my eyes)
- on my first visit ... I wasn't even interestec of the content beacuse of the theme look
- footbar looks bad
- all looks like bad html site from 80's
- when I read news, my eyes hurt

Good:

- center-right block in the banner area
- favicon.ico

That's all.

Feedback is a form of critisizm. If it weren't for that, my site wouldn't be where it is right now. I think that what we could do here to salvage the topic instead of keeping it a flaming thread is possibly post some suggestions on what would might work better (if any) for some of the things that people saw. Personally, the theme isn't my cup of tea, but hey I personally commend someone that makes a theme in the first place! Just my two cents.

Just to make sure everyone understands: Bahattee just removed his account voluntarily. He was not banned or forced by the XOOPS team.
We did however, tell him to watch the tone and language of his posts in the future, as we expect from all our members.

We wish Bahattee all the best with (and without) XOOPS, of course.

Personally I do not like the theme either. I agree that it is quite plain, and rather ugly. It feels very nukey.

That is my opinion.

Thanks for making the effort in sharing you theme. The fact you even made an attempt makes you a much more valuable member that 9 out of 10 others in my opinion. Don't get discouraged by what people might say about it, it is fact that your work (or anyone's) is not going to be appreciated by everyone. You just need to remember opinions are like @ssholes, everyone has one, and as long as you're happy with your work that's all that counts at the end of the day .

it appears that a few xoopers are under the impression that someone has died and made them theme gods. anyway, ...

open and honest criticism is helpful, but using words like "ugly" simply leaves a bad taste. and as brash suggests this has nothing to do with community.

so, do not be discourged by the few who have no conception of what community or constructive criticism is. keep up the good work beerme.

I know the theme isn't anything special. When I first started trying to use Xoops, I didn't know anything about CSS or Xoops, and very little about HTML. I picked a theme that looked decent and I hacked it up. I'm learning as I go along. I'm not even a programmer, guys -- I'm just an ignorant cell phone salesman! I went out and got a copy of Photoshop CS, so hopefully I will be able to make some decent graphics for my beer website. (If there is a sympathetic beer lover out there that could help me with that, I would definitely give him or her props on my site!)

Don't worry, the "ugly" comments don't bother me, though I wish people would give some suggestions for improvement when they call it ugly. I can't program PHP, so a theme or two is all I can really give back to the community. So far, 26 people have thought the theme is useful enough to download, so I feel like it is not a total waste of time!

Please don't mistake my "it is plain and ugly" as a harsh rant. My first sites were, even in my own opinion, very ugly.

However, if everyone blows sunshine up everyone elses butt, especially in themes, there would be little progress. I hate themes were I can instantly tell the site is running a CMS. I do not think that a good design should be dictated by the system.

I indicated this in my previous post. It feels very nukey, as in PHP-Nuke.

That is my opinion. If I posted my site and asked for a review (Which I have not, so zip it ) and some one told me it was ugly or plain, I would not be upset. I would try to make it better.

Yep, I don't think its ugly, I just prefer other types of themes, (as you can tell by my site). Theming is not something that most people grasp, and the ones that can do it should be commended. We have far too few themes to choose from. So keep up the hard work! Hell I have a horrible time with colors, mixing and matching them. Thats why I rely on other people to help me out in that respect. I can code just fine, but when it comes to the graphics side of it, thats where I rely on outside help for it. I recently found this site, www.clantemplates.com, which have free templates to download, just as long as you keep a link back to their site on yours. Converting a theme to work with XOOPS is very easy, it just takes time. I use those guys (clantemplates) to get ideas from, or if I happen to find a theme that I like, I will download it and convert it to Xoops.

I am no Photoshop wiz, or for that matter a coding wiz either, I do it because its entertaining. I think thats why most of us do it.

I like the site layout and the clever use of blocks. But, I too don't like the colours.
I would use the same hues but with less saturation.
