I recently published my chess module in the downloads section. The module allows users to play chess games against each other.

I've set up a public demo. If you don't want to register, here are a couple of testing accounts:

Username: demo1
Password: demo1

I'd appreciate some feedback on how well it works, whether it has bugs, etc. Feedback by PM or email is ok, but it's probably better if each issue is posted as a separate thread in the appropriate XOOPS Modules Support forum.

This module is great!!! I would like to see some improvements in the interface, like maybe that the game loads in a frame that refreshes itself (dont know if this is possible, but I mean a somewhat faster way of playing, or at least that it seems faster). Also maybe a way of contacting the other player for normal chat while playing (maybe this is already possible).

Does this use templates? Congratulations, its a great module and seems to have a lot of potential

Thanks. You might want to raise the refresh and chat issues in the forum. Yes, it uses templates.

Have you tried installing the module on your site? (I'd like to know whether there are problems in installation/uninstallation/usage etc.)

Yes, unless you change the templates so they don't use the xoops_format_date modifier. That modifier uses Javascript to display the date/times in the current user's timezone, even if the page is cached. I don't like the fact that installing this module requires adding a couple of files to the core directories, but I couldn't figure out a way of avoiding that.

(If you want to discuss that further, the forum would probably be a better place.)

My friend is building a chess site.
I recommended your module and he would like to uplod your module to his site for downloading. is that ok?

I also recommended xoops. He seems like to make his own scripts
Wondering how he would handle your module without XOOPS

The module has the GNU GPL license, so he can do that if he wants. But I think it would be better if he links to the download area here, which will have the latest version.

I just released version 1.0.6. No new features, but a few bug fixes.

I've hacked in a ratings system using the Chess Express System - http://www.chess-express.com/explain.htm - and had it running on my site for a little while. It will back calculates current ratings from the start if you want.

I tried to use ELO but it has a nasty lookup table and did my head in.

Its against a slightly earlier version of the module, but I don't see it being difficult to port to the latest.

I've also done a sort of player profiles page.

Who should I submit them to?

Thanks, I saw your post on the feature requests tracker. I'll take a look at it, and see if I can incorporate your changes into the current version.

I had also been thinking of additional changes to the user interface, such as letting a player choose whether he wants to play a rated or unrated game, and in the case of an open challenge limiting his opponent to someone near his rating, etc. When I get all my planned changes figured out, I'll post a topic about it, so that you and others can give me your opinions on it.

I had been looking at the ELO system, and it gave me a headache too.

First I would like to say you have done a great job with your chess module ..thanks Dave.

A rating system is important as well as being able to generate statics that users find interesting. Type of openings being played, win loss ratios, this type of information. Give it some bells and whistles, flashey buttons and charts and you will have them eating it up...grin.

The rating system from OCC should give you a template to follow.

As I said great work, I hope to see great things frm this module.
