Developer News: Modules need additional developers at dev.xoops.org

There are many modules in development over at the XOOPS Dev Forge Site, and there are several Help Wanted postings for developers to join the module dev teams.

These positions are volunteer of course, and most if not all of the open positions are for PHP or SQL developers. If you think you have what it takes, Apply to join the Dev Site and then apply for the job posting.

This is a good opportunity for those of you looking to give back to the Xoops Community!

I'd love to help out over at the dev site, however, I've submitted a request 3 times to get an account and not even a 'Thanks but no thanks' response.

We are getting an enormous amount of submitted requests, but the main problem is that about 60% of them don't fill out why they want to join.

dev.xoops.org is not a place for beginners to learn PHP. It is a place for skilled programmers with desires to make good modules - and rookies, who want to improve and learn by working with more skilled people.

If you do not have a project you want to work on, but want to help out on an existing one, contact the project manager on that/those project(s) and arrange matters with them first, then apply and specify that you have arranged to join this or that team.

Apart from that, it is Predator and Catzwolf taking care of applications and both are quite busy. I'll get a word with Predator when I see him again in order to at least not hinder registrations due to applications not being read fast enough.

I experienced the same response as Kerjin However, I do understand that everyone is quite busy. Perhaps, a bit more detail regarding the tasks the various projects need to accomplish would help. I certainly appreciate that this is an all-volunteer effort. Everyone who participates and contributes in a positive should be commended but I understand the need to have a controlled environment for software development. It is also vitally important to "grow" some more folks like Predator and Catzwolf in order to share the load more evenly...or at least provide some comic relief.

Regarding learning and knowing PHP, while an important skill, it is the XOOPS software design and architecture that is my biggest hurdle right now as I am working on a module for use here at the college. PHP & SQL are just a part of the puzzle/solution.

I have lost count of the number of different languages I used then forgotten. Really, who uses SNOBOL, BLISS, ASM, BAL, PASCAL, Modulo-2, LISP, Scheme, ALGOL, MUMPS, DATATRIEVE, or FORTRAN-V any more? (Oh, I know... some are still around and useful ... but I still really miss PASCAL ) Learning grammars & syntax for computer languages is easy, learning to use the language well, ... that takes experience, some mentoring, and some effort, above all a willingness to try, to learn and endure some mistakes..as well as some supportive and constructive comments from your esteemed peers.

Kerjin and JohnCVermont,

There are "tons" of thing you can do, you can test the modules or the new core releases, you can help to create documentations, you can create your own modules, you can give support in the forums etc etc.

Everybody is "welcome".

Herko, Predator and I have discussed how to make dev.xoops.org balance properly between

a) Letting those people in, who will be able to help
b) Keep those people out, who will not

and will perhaps open for registrations but not give access to the developer forums etc. until the user is connected to a project.

Until then, please continue to use the application form and write as much as possible about what you want to do on dev.xoops.org ("Work on my own project, which is..." or "Work with ... on this project: ...")

more activity in the dev forums would be super. as it is, threads sit for a week in the 'recent topics' block, and not because they are popular... :-X

I'm having the same problem some other posters have had. I applied at for an account (it was a good application, not like the bogus one you gave as a bad example) and haven't heard anything at all.

If you really want developers to join, you shouldn't ask for help then ignore the replies. It's better to not ask at all if you aren't prepared to deal with the results.

I'm a bit frustrated. I have a module that is about 80% complete and would like to add it as a project. It's perhaps too specific in focus to be of general use, but it's a small database app that might be a good "model" for others who want to add a customized database app to their site.

Plus, I'm actively learning about module development and could make good use of the resources there.

We are working as much as we can (due to time issues) on a solution, which will let people register without moderation.

Once registered it will be possible to start new projects (which are moderated, though, but easier to approve/disapprove) or join existing projects.

With the project member status comes access to the hidden parts of the site.

However, we need to test it properly before launching it.

I am not sure that this is the place to make this comment - if not, I ask that someone please redirect me to the correct place. I am an application installer who uses XOOPS / php extensively, but I probably only rate a 3 (out of ten) in terms of my understanding of the internals of xoops, and my php programming capabilities. I need particular XOOPS functionality for a project I am working on, but I have not found any published module that addresses my needs. I am willing to finance the development of the module I need, subject to the module being released to the general community as an available module for xoops, under the standard license. The financing can be to the XOOPS coder directly, to xoops.org as a contribution, or a combination of both. I am looking for a *very* experienced developer to do this project, which must be compatible with (but not require) smarty templates, and XOOPS 2.1.1 and above. Where do I post such a request? I looked at dev.xoops.org, but that seems oriented to developers who want to contribute for free, not persons who are looking for developers who are willing to contribute, but want to be paid.
