Is it possible to remove the login block?

And more importantly....

If I remove it, how can I login to make changes, updates to the site??

Yes - deactivate it in modules admin just like any other block.

Checking the Login block as not visible in the System>Block area doesn't seem to work. It still appears

try to disable the block in all groups. admin->system->groups

If you have done that then I think you may have actually cached the block. Remove the cache on it.
