Help with adding new template

Im new to xoops. So I want to change my web site appearance or template and I downloaded a new template made for XOOPS with a .zip extension and when i go to system>templates and try to upload this new one it says that it must be a tar.gz or tar file and it won't do it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

no in modules/templates but yoursite/themes/
