Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to install XOOPS when I don't have a public_html folder? The installation instructions tell me to rename that folder (if I had one) to "xoops". I'm using Fatcow as my host and it meets all the requirements. The HTML files by default reside in the /username folder.

Do I create a folder in my /username folder like this:
/username/xoops
and then dump all the files from the installation's "htdocs" into there?

And while the site is being built, is there a way to put some standard HTML pages for visitors in the meantime (or way to re-direct them elsewhere).

1. You have to find out to which folder your domainname actually points to
- right now your site usually shows some kind of spaceholder file i guess? So you might need to find that one to find your root directory
- if you cant find it ask your host

2. Upload the XOOPS files and subfolder to that folder

3. In the meantime you might be able to create an index.html to show some stuff to your visitors because XOOPS uses index.php. However the question is which file is displayed by the webserver first. (usually index.html)

Alternatively you can build your site at home locally and upload it later using xampp or some other php/mysql package.

Here are the instructions I'm trying to follow. (It's from http://xoopsdocs.net/modules/docs/en/xu-002/online/ch02.html )

"So, in order to begin your installation, you have to copy the contents of the full html directory to the root directory of your environment. What was that again? You need to copy the contents of the full html directory to the root directory of your environment. Oh, you'd rather have a little explanation about this. Well, here it goes.

Now, if you're installing your site in a hosted remote server, you'll have to upload the html directory to one of the directories you have access to. In this case, you'll probably have a public_html folder, and that's where you'll need to upload the complete html directory. Again, after uploading everything (probably with an FTP client software), change the name of this folder to xoops. Since you'll be installing in your root folder, in this case you'll access your site typing in your browser http://www.yoursite.com."

Can I just type in http://www.yoursite.com/install/install_tpl.php

Wish I could test it more right now. My host is modifying the mySQL database, so I can't do anything at the moment but I'm also pressed for time :(

Your suggestion to create an index.html file to override Xoops' index.php while I rebuild my site with XOOPS is perfect.

Also, about my previous pre-installation problem....

Even though I didn't have a "public_html" folder to re-name, I ended up copying all my files to my root directly.

After that, rather than type http://www.mysite.com to load the installer, I typed http://www.mysite.com/install and everything worked fine.
