Does Xoops have to be installed in the root directory?

Does XOOPS have to be installed in the root directory? I am planning on using XOOPS as a company intranet and prefer it to be in a sub directory of our public site. Are there any major pit-falls ahead of me?

I always install XOOPS in a subdirectory. There's no problem with doing it that way.
